Our Food System
The way we shop, eat, and provide for ourselves and families is more varied than ever before, but it is also going through a renaissance; more and more people are harking back to skills and habits that, only a generation ago were common practice. Why Change? Longer food chain supplies; intensive and industrial farming practices; fruits and vegetables with depleted nutritional quality... Those who scratch the surface of what is really behind the glossy, out-of-season produce in the supermarkets will realise the full value of growing & gathering your own food, straight from garden to table. The Benefits Health, wealth, and autonomy from being reliant on external sources (ie corporations) to nourish you. Being a 'producer' - not just a consumer. It's a simple yet empowering choice. My first plot many years ago measured just a few metres square, but by choosing to eat what was in season, I ate vegetables solely from my garden between late May & October. Better still, I wasted nothing, because, naturally, I valued it so much more. How to get started My ethos is to make it manageable, and be realistic. It's as much about quality as quantity. Any spare outside space you have is just a little knowledge and know-how away from providing you with something good to eat! And The Kitchen Garden School is here to help you do exactly that! |
